Historical Society of Dayton Valley (Nevada)

Docent Program

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley has an active docent program. The Docents not only staff the museum during its regular open hours (March through November, Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.) but also keep the museum open every day during May (11 a.m. - 3 p.m. weekdays) for Historic Preservation Month. (Note that the museum is usually closed during the winter, from December to mid- to late February, depending on weather.)

If you would like to volunteer to help staff the museum, learn and teach history, assist with museum acquisitions, clean or do odd jobs, or any other volunteer activity, we have a place for you! We learn, we teach, we help, and we have A LOT of fun!

We need a new Docent Newsletter editor!
Our editor has taken a well deserved retirement so we're looking for a replacement. Each month various Society members will provide content while others will write things up as asked, so your "job" would be to assemble that information into a newsletter and email it out to the membership. You may have to shake a few trees or send up a flare or two (or whatever your preference) to "encourage" contributions but often members will provide content if asked.
In the past we have sent out a newsletter at the beginning of the month, with a combined issue in January/February, but all "offers" will be considered. Format is also very flexible.
If you are new to the Society this is a great way to "learn things." Want to know about local Native Americans or old mill sites? Contact a member who may know and ask them to write a few paragraphs. Have you examined a display in the museum and want to know more? Another newsletter opportunity! Our members love old pictures so you can ask members to give you a great old picture or maybe a "then and now" combination for the newsletter. You can also put out questions for members to answer. It is a great opportunity to educate all of us while you learn yourself!
For more information call 461-3829 or email Gloria or Laura.
